Background of the Study

Workplace stress has become a prevalent concern across various industries, including the banking sector, where employees often face high levels of job demands, tight deadlines, and performance expectations. Stress is generally defined as a psychological and physiological response to environmental demands that exceed an individual’s ability to cope (Sonnentag, 2024). In the context of banking, stress can arise from various factors such as long working hours, customer demands, financial targets, and organizational changes. Chronic workplace stress can have significant negative effects on employee well-being, leading to burnout, anxiety, and a decline in physical and mental health (Chauhan & Kumar, 2023).

First Bank of Nigeria Plc, one of the country's leading financial institutions, operates numerous branches across Kebbi State. In this region, employees are often required to manage heavy workloads, stringent regulatory requirements, and customer satisfaction metrics, all of which can contribute to workplace stress. Despite its impact on individual health, stress also has considerable implications for employee productivity, as stressed employees may experience difficulties concentrating, a decrease in work efficiency, and an increased likelihood of absenteeism (Jain & Singh, 2023).

Given the critical nature of employee productivity in the banking sector, it is essential for organizations like First Bank to understand how workplace stress affects their employees' performance and what interventions can be implemented to mitigate these effects. This study aims to examine the relationship between workplace stress and employee productivity at First Bank in Kebbi State, identifying key stressors and exploring their impact on job performance.

Statement of the Problem

While workplace stress is a well-documented issue in many sectors, the relationship between stress and productivity, specifically in the banking industry in Kebbi State, remains underexplored. First Bank, as one of the major financial institutions operating in the state, has a vested interest in understanding how workplace stress affects employee output and organizational success. Without proper management, the effects of stress can lead to reduced productivity, low employee morale, and increased turnover rates. This study seeks to address this gap by exploring how stress in the workplace at First Bank influences employee performance, and identifying the causes of stress that may affect overall productivity.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
